The twenty most useful
If you take twenty words from this page, take these — the ones that do work no other word on the list quite does.
- nebulous — the exact word for a plan with no edges yet
- nuanced — praise for an answer that refuses to simplify
- negligible — dismisses a quantity without dismissing the person
- nonchalant — unconcern that is performed rather than felt
- notorious — fame with the sign flipped
- nimble — physical quickness, and the mental kind by extension
- nostalgic — the most useful mood word on the page
- nascent — for something real but not yet formed
- noxious — harm you can smell
- nondescript — the absence of description, described
- notional — for a plan that exists on paper and nowhere else
- nefarious — wickedness with a plan behind it
- neat — small, and does more work than it looks
- noteworthy — the polite form of remarkable
- numb — physical and emotional in the same word
- nagging — persistence that wears rather than strikes
- novel — new in a way that matters
- neutral — the hardest tone to actually achieve
- nocturnal — precise, and has no one-word rival
- numinous — for the silence a cathedral has and a hall does not
The positive ones
Praise-side words. Noteworthy and notable are near-identical; notable describes the thing, noteworthy argues for it.
natural, neat, nimble, noble, notable, noteworthy, nourishing, novel, nuanced, nutritious, neighbourly, nifty, natty, newsworthy, noted, navigable, nonpartisan, natural-born, necessary
The negative ones
Criticism-side words. Negligent is a failure of duty; neglected is its result on the thing left behind.
nasty, naughty, nauseating, needless, needy, nefarious, negative, neglected, negligent, nervous, neurotic, nightmarish, nihilistic, nitpicking, noisy, nonsensical, nosy, notorious, noxious, narcissistic
Describing appearance
N is genuinely thin on appearance words, which is why nondescript ends up doing so much of the work. Three words that look like candidates are not: nearsighted is a vision condition rather than something visible, numb is a sensation, and nasal describes a voice.
naked, narrow, natty, neat, nondescript, newborn, nimble
Common mistakes
| Pair | The difference that matters |
|---|---|
| negligent / negligible | Negligent is about carelessness in a person. Negligible is about a quantity being too small to matter. |
| nauseous / nauseated | Traditionally nauseous means causing sickness and nauseated means feeling it. Ordinary use has largely merged them; formal writing has not. |
| notable / notorious | Both mean widely known. Notorious adds that the reason is a bad one. |
| naive / nascent | Naive is a judgement about inexperience. Nascent is a neutral statement about early stage. |
